by George Cooper (Juniors Coach)

Congratulations to Christopher Cooper who won the 14U Surrey Trophy in an exiting final that took place at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton on Saturday 13th July 2019.

Christopher won 6-3, 7-5

He had previously beaten the number 1 seed after dropping the first set 5-7, but then went on to win the next 2 sets 6-1, 6-0.

On the same day as the final, Christopher then managed to get to the quarter finals of the Road to Wimbledon County finals on the grass courts of the All England Community tennis centre at Raynes Park. Despite fighting on with a badly sprained calf muscle he eventually lost to the Surrey County winner who will represent Surrey at the national finals at the All England club in August.

Christopher is a regular attendee of the junior coaching programme which takes place at Selsdon tennis club each Saturday morning throughout the year.

Other STC juniors were also successful in the Surrey Trophy. Lewis Vale won his way through to the quarter final stage of the 14U boys and Bianca Bahnovei won her way through to the semi final stage of the 12U girls competition.

Well done to you all!

Under 14 Boys v Leatherhead LTC - 20/5/18

by George Cooper (U14's Coach)

Selsdon 14 and Under boys emphatic 10-2 victory over Leatherhead LTC !

Selsdon LTC 14 and under boys scored an emphatic victory over Leatherhead LTC on Sunday 20th May 2018. In a fantastically strong team performance Selsdon won 10-2 overall.

On a beautiful warm sunny afternoon, first on court were the 4 singles matches, with each match displaying some wonderful tennis. After a great battle and playing on with an injured shoulder Tyler Ecott eventually lost 3-6, 2-6, Lewis Vale held firm to win 6-2, 6-3, with both Jojo Quaquah and Christopher Cooper both having comfortable wins, Jojo winning 6-0, 6-3 and Christopher winning 6-0, 6-1.

After the completion of all four singles matches Selsdon had a 3-1 lead in rubbers and with 2 points being awarded for each rubber, Selsdon had a 6-2 lead going into the doubles round. The boys teamed up in the pairs that they had played in during their previous match against Limpsfield. Christopher partnering Jojo and Tyler playing with Lewis. Christopher and Jojo had to raise their game as their opponents frequently attacked the net, but in a match that had some fantastic rallys and a high level of play throughout Christopher and Jojo clinched a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Meanwhile another great match was taking place on court 2, where Tyler and Lewis had won the first set 6-3 but in a very entertaining and exciting second set just lost out 4-6, so the match went to a third set championship tie break, which is the first pair to win 10 points, which saw Tyler and Lewis hold their nerve to win 10-6, giving the team a 10-2 victory overall.

Well done to all four of the boys who played and competed really well with high levels of sportsmanship throughout and for representing and portraying our club in such a positive way. We are all very proud of you !

Under 14 Boys v Limpsfield TC - 29/4/18

by George Cooper (U14's Coach)

Selsdon LTC 14 and Under boys team narrowly missed out on a win against Limpsfield tennis club in an epic fixture on Sunday 29th April. In an incredible performance that the team coach George Cooper described as inspirational, the Selsdon team, in Christopher Cooper, Jojo Quaquah, Tyler Ecott and Lewis Vale played some truly fantastic tennis forcing the match to a tiebreak “ shootout”.

On a very cold and somewhat windy afternoon, the fixture began with each of the 4 boys playing singles against their opposite counterpart from Limpsfield. After the singles round, Christopher managed to win against a player rated much higher than him, Jojo fought really well also against a player rated much higher than him and despite playing with a wrist injury and eventually losing played some great tennis. Tyler made a great debut losing in two close sets and Lewis managed to win in two very competitive sets. So after the singles round the two clubs were drawn level going into the doubles round. Christopher and Jojo teamed up but lost a really entertaining match against the first pair, but Tyler and Lewis managed a convincing win against the second pair, which meant that the match was a draw and had to be decided with a sudden death championship tiebreak. After a team discussion, it was decided that Christopher and Lewis should play. The shootout was played against the opponents in front of an audience of parents from both teams, but after dropping behind 4-1 Christopher and Lewis managed to level and it went point for point until 7-7, but after two very close line calls eventually lost 10-7. However, George praised his team for a most inspirational performance against a club three times bigger than Selsdon, in a match that started just before 2pm and finished around 6pm.

Particular acknowledgement should be given to Tyler Ecott who playing in his first match performed and competed fantastically well and to Lewis Vale who represented the team after playing two football matches and still managed to win his singles and doubles matches!

The team will next play Leatherhead at home on Sunday 20th May.
